How is AI Used on Chronicles of Krynn?

With the recent, explosive entry of AI-generated content on the Internet, it has proven to be a topic of some controversy. As such, Chronicles of Krynn desires to be transparent about the use of AI in the systems and content on the MUD.

WEB SITE

The web site has liberal use of AI, especially in text content. AI is used to create descriptive text for classes and races, as well as organize and cleanly display other information, such as features, news and changelogs. There are a few instances of AI-generated art as well.

IN-GAME CONTENT

Chronicles of Krynn is based off an old CircleMUD called Age of Dragons, which ran from about 1995 to 2010. Though still online, it is not actively maintained or played. Currently (as of February, 2026) the MUD has just over 11,200 rooms. Of those, only about 100 have used AI-generative text. Most of the staff prefer not to use AI for generating content. Going forward, it is possible that AI could be used for things such as: room descriptions, mob descriptions, object descriptions, quest dialogue text.

GAME CODE AND MECHANICS

Since around summer of 2025, AI has been used liberally to assist in executing game design concepts into code. The crafting system and perks system were both made largely using AI, mainly using GitHub copilot and Claude Haiku 4.5. For  those unfamiliar with how AI coding works, it is done by the use of prompts, and constantly refining, guiding and correcting actions performed by the AI agent. This means a coder can give the AI a set of instructions, turn their focus to other tasks while the AI creates the code, and then check with the results the AI agent has created. Based on those results, the coder can then refine their instructions, correct mistakes or unintended outcomes made by the AI and give additional tasks. This process repeats until the project given to the AI agent is complete. It does require a coder that understands the coding language used and codebase. Ultimately, the benefit of AI in coding is that it frees up the coder to multi-task, as they can give the AI agent instructions, and then work on something else while the AI carries them out. This practice is highly likely to continue to be a staple of development in advancing the codebase that Chronicles of Krynn uses. Not all problems can be fixed with AI, however, and manual code and code revisions of AI-generated code are still a mainstay of development.

SUMMARY

At the end of the day, Chronicles of Krynn does use a small amount of AI in game content, and a large amount of AI-use in the coding process. This practice is likely to continue. We have staff members on both sides of the AI discussion. We have some who laud the convenience and creative power that modern AI offers, and we have traditionalists who believe that the human element in art, of which a MUD is a collective artistic entity, should be left in the realm of humans and humans alone.
