Sunlit white-stone towers and bridges of Palanthas against a mountain backdrop

Palanthas, Jewel of Solamnia

White stone gleams around a rose-shaped fountain as merchants, knights, and travelers cross the Central Plaza. From Market Square comes the sound of musicians and vendors competing for attention. Farther north, salt hangs in the air above the docks, where fishing boats unload their catches beside vessels bound for distant shores.

Welcome to Palanthas: a city of learning, commerce, and opportunity—and a place where an adventurer can discover how much trouble survives a war.

A beautiful city in an uncertain peace

Our story takes place just a few years after the War of the Lance. The Dragonarmies have been defeated, but peace has not put an end to their schemes. Palanthas remains a home for the Knights of Solamnia and the Forces of Whitestone, drawing those who hope to protect the peace, rebuild their lives, or find a place in a changing world.

Sheltered on the Bay of Branchala and framed by the Vingaard Mountains, Palanthas has long enjoyed a reputation for beauty and prosperity. Its older districts hold grand civic buildings and institutions of learning, while trade brings people and goods from across Ansalon. Beneath the white marble and polished manners, however, rival interests compete for influence. A merchant's missing shipment may matter far beyond the countinghouse, and a quiet conversation at the docks may have consequences for the whole city.

Lord Amothus presides over civic affairs from his palace. Knights and militia patrol the streets. At the Great Library, Astinus continues his patient work of recording the history of Krynn. For most citizens, these familiar institutions promise stability. Adventurers soon learn why that stability still needs defending.

Find your bearings at the Central Plaza

The Central Plaza is the natural starting point for a visit to Palanthas. Its fountain and busy streets make it a gathering place for residents and newcomers alike. From here, avenues lead toward markets, shops, the palace, and the city's other landmarks.

For a new adventurer, help may begin with someone easily overlooked: a mysterious old woman with a few apparently modest requests. A little work in the Gardens of the Blue Phoenix offers a chance to learn your way around, earn rewards, and discover where a simple act of assistance might lead.

You do not need to arrive as a celebrated hero. Palanthas has work for people willing to start small.

Explore the city

Market Square and the shops

Market Square is crowded, noisy, and full of life. Vendors call out their wares while entertainers perform for passing crowds. The surrounding shops offer weapons, armor, general supplies, gems, and accessories, making this a useful place to prepare for a journey or turn a successful expedition into better equipment.

The Palanthas Bazaar offers another destination for adventurers looking to fill gaps in their gear. Elsewhere, the bank, exchange, and donation room help make the city a practical home between adventures.

The palace and the Knight's House

Broad marble paths and imposing columns announce the Palace of Palanthas. Within its halls, officials, visitors, servants, and guards attend to the business of a city determined to preserve its importance.

Adventurers may find their way to Captain Orluf, whose responsibilities extend well beyond the palace doors. The nearby Knight's House gives the Solamnic orders a presence in the daily life of the city, with spaces devoted to training and fellowship.

For a character drawn to duty, service, or the difficult choices of the postwar years, Palanthas offers a fitting place to begin.

The Great Library

The Great Library is one of Palanthas's defining institutions. Its public archives preserve the work of historians, bards, and other writers of Ansalon. Behind its quiet halls lies the continuing labor of Astinus and the Aesthetics, chroniclers devoted to the world's history.

A scholar may come seeking an account of an ancient conflict. A traveler may want to understand a place glimpsed on a distant road. An adventurer may arrive with a question that suddenly seems more urgent than expected. The Library gives all of them a reason to linger in the city.

The Wizard Academy

Palanthas also offers a place for magical study. The Wizard Academy contains classrooms, training spaces, a magic shop, and a spell research library. Wizards can research spells for their spellbooks, while a visit to the academy's sage can help identify unfamiliar finds.

The academy is a destination for learning and adventuring in its own right. Beyond its halls, Palanthas also carries the darker reputation of the Tower of High Sorcery and the Shoikan Grove—names that belong to the city's most unsettling stories.

The waterfront

The docks look out onto the Bay of Branchala, where the city's prosperity takes visible form in boats, warehouses, cargoes, and labor. Fishermen tend their vessels while larger ships connect Palanthas with the wider world.

The waterfront is also a place to keep your eyes open. Not every cargo is honestly declared, and not everyone asking questions about a shipment is working for its owner. Palanthas's old association with smugglers has not entirely faded beneath its respectable appearance.

Travelers can use the city's sailing connections to venture farther afield, including to Bethel Island. Carriages outside the southern gates offer another way to continue a journey across the region.

Gardens and sacred spaces

The Gardens of the Blue Phoenix offer a gentler side of the city, with cultivated paths, trees, birdsong, and room to pause between expeditions. For many new adventurers, they are also the setting of their first local work.

At the Temple of Paladine, pilgrims and worshippers gather beneath dragon motifs and celestial mosaics. In a world living with the consequences of the War of the Lance, such places give faith a visible role in everyday life.

Beneath the streets

The sewers reveal a different Palanthas. Tunnels lead away from the bright streets into underground waterways and concealed places where the city's laws hold less authority. Somewhere beyond them, the thieves' guild pursues its own interests.

Other paths lead toward the Lost Caverns, while the graveyard and its catacombs offer dangers of their own. These are places to enter prepared. The safety of a busy plaza does not follow you underground.

Make Palanthas your home between adventures

Palanthas supports more than shopping and sightseeing. Its services give adventurers reasons to return, whether they are traveling alone or gathering with companions.

The crafting guild makes its workrooms available without a room-use charge, though crafters still need their tools and materials. Whether you prefer to forge equipment, study magic, pursue contracts, or prepare for your next expedition, the city provides a useful base.

Palanthas is also available as a hometown. It is especially well suited to characters whose stories connect them to Solamnia, the Knighthood, or the Whitestone alliance, while its markets and harbor bring a much wider variety of people into its streets.

Adventures that grow with you

Your first task in Palanthas might involve little more than troublesome wildlife. As people come to trust you, the work becomes more complicated. Reports of smuggling, missing people, troubling research, and suspicious activity draw adventurers into the unfinished business of the war.

The city's stories move between places that initially seem worlds apart: a garden, a captain's office, an academy classroom, a waterfront warehouse. Following their connections can take you well beyond Palanthas, toward other communities and older mysteries across Ansalon.

You will meet people with different reasons to ask for help. Some are trying to protect their families. Others serve a faith or an alliance. Some know more than they can safely say. Discovering whom to trust is part of finding your place in the city.

A place for your character's story

A knight might see Palanthas as a responsibility: a city whose peace must be earned again each day. A wizard might value its opportunities for study, while a bard finds an audience in Market Square and a wealth of stories in the archives. A craftsperson can build a livelihood around the guild, and a wanderer can find company at the docks before the next voyage.

The years after the War of the Lance leave room for all of these lives. Veterans remember what was lost. New adventurers wonder what they might become. Merchants want reliable roads, scholars want answers, and ordinary families want the peace to last.

Palanthas offers a place among them—and plenty of reasons to step beyond the fountain and see where the next street leads.

Setting note: This guide presents Palanthas in the early years after the War of the Lance. Later Dragonlance events and occupations are not treated as the city's present. The MUD adapts the setting with its own locations, characters, and adventures.
