A New Era of Adventure: Player Housing, Shops, Crafting, Combat, and More
Chronicles of Krynn Development Update — October 23, 2026
Ansalon continues to grow, and October has brought one of our most substantial collections of updates yet! From establishing your own home and running a player-owned shop to discovering new crafting materials, training companions, and mastering powerful magic, there's plenty for adventurers to explore.
This update also introduces major improvements to combat, spellcasting, character progression, quests, and quality of life, alongside dozens of bug fixes.
Build a Home and Open Your Own Shop
Two major new systems give players more ways to establish themselves in the world of Krynn.
Player Housing
Adventurers can now build, expand, and customize their own houses. Rather than relying on predefined housing arrangements, players can develop their own personal spaces, extending and improving them over time.
Whether you're looking for a quiet retreat after a long journey or a place to call your own, player housing opens up exciting new possibilities.
Player-Owned Shops
Players can now operate their own shops through the new player shop system.
This creates new opportunities for merchants, crafters, and adventurers to participate in Ansalon's economy.
See HELP STALLS in-game for details.
Crafting, Gathering, and a Richer World
The crafting and gathering systems have received significant improvements, making professions more rewarding and tying resources more closely to Ansalon's environment.
New Harvest Materials and Environments
A wider variety of harvestable materials is now available, with different resources appearing according to local climate and terrain.
Zones now have climate and terrain information that helps determine weather patterns and available harvest materials.
A new material exchange service also allows players to exchange materials of the same type and grade at a 1:1 ratio. For example, grade 1 ash wood can be exchanged for grade 1 pine wood.
Improved Crafting Progression
Crafting and gathering experience now displays clearer progress toward the next rank:
Mining: XP 17414 | TNL 3586 (next rank: 6)
The Insightful talent has also been improved for mining, hunting, forestry, gathering, and butchering. Each rank now provides a 20% experience bonus, reaching 100% at five ranks.
Rare Materials and Motes
Defeated enemies can now drop rare crafting materials and motes alongside their normal random treasure.
Higher-grade materials become available from stronger enemies, while grade 5 materials and dragonmetal require level 30 or higher enemies and are particularly rare.
These drops are added directly to your crafting balances and saved immediately. Use materials to view your collection.
Companions That Grow With You
Pets and companions have received an extensive progression update.
Purchased pets can now gain levels and be revived, making them more valuable long-term companions.
Class-based pets, including animal companions and eidolons, can also earn training ranks through experience and gold, allowing players to improve various attributes.
Several creatures and forms now swim automatically in swimmable water without Athletics checks, including crocodiles, water elementals, aquatic-tagged pets, polar bears, and black or green dragon forms.
Wildshape swimming benefits end when the character returns to their natural form. Boat-only waters and ocean ship requirements remain unchanged.
New Magic, Feats, and Spellcasting Improvements
The Three Moons of Magic
The complete moon alignment system for arcane spellcasters has been implemented, bringing an important element of Dragonlance's magical traditions into the game.
See HELP MOONS for details.
New Spells and Abilities
Several new magical options are available:
- Litany of Damnation, a newly added spell.
- Protection from Poison and Panacea, providing additional magical options.
- Overland Flight for Dragon Riders.
- Practiced Spellcaster, a newly added feat.
- Improvements to epic spells, documented in
HELP EPIC SPELLS.
Shifter players can also consult HELP SHIFTERDRAGON for information about their dragon forms.
Alchemist Improvements
Alchemists have received numerous improvements to bombs, extracts, and poison-related abilities.
Bombs now use the ranged attack category, allowing ranged weapon-focus feats to improve bomb attacks. Bomb accuracy bonuses are applied without double-counting, and bomb throws now display attack rolls and damage dice.
The new Faster Bomb Preparation feat reduces preparation cooldown to three seconds. Bomb creation also displays the number of prepared bombs and the maximum available.
Ordinary alchemist extracts can now be used silently, even in silenced or soundproof areas.
Apply Poison is now correctly available to Alchemists at level 6 alongside Swift Poisoning.
Defensive Magic
The affects command now displays remaining protective hit points for Stoneskin, Ironskin, and Epic Warding.
Recasting these spells refreshes their protection, including fixes to Stoneskin refresh behavior and Ironskin recasting restrictions.
Permanent Account-Wide Bonuses
Players can now invest account experience into permanent bonuses shared across their account.
Four categories are available:
| Bonus | Maximum |
|---|---|
| Experience gained | +10% |
| Treasure drop chance | +10 percentage points |
| Gold gained | +10% |
| Quest points gained | +10% |
Each 1% upgrade costs 2,000 account XP, with a maximum of 10 upgrades per category.
Use the following commands:
accexp bonus
accexp bonus <type>
The first displays your current bonuses, while the second purchases an upgrade.
Bonuses persist and update across logged-in characters.
Combat Formations and Better Buff Management
A new combat formation system gives groups additional tools for organizing their battles.
See HELP FORMATION for details.
Players can also maintain up to 10 separate buff lists, with support for targeting other characters using buff perform.
Quarterstaves can now be wielded in either one hand or two, providing greater flexibility.
Airborne characters now display the room description:
is flying here.
Additionally, automatic NPC buffing no longer includes Detect Magic, Detect Poison, or Detect Alignment. Detect Invisibility remains available, while True Seeing now functions during wizard pre-buffing when class and level requirements are met.
More Convenient Devices and Editing
Devices can now be reordered with:
device move <number> <position>
For example:
device move 7 1
This moves device 7 to the first position and shifts the others down. The new order is saved without losing charges, cooldowns, or condition.
The text editor has also been adjusted. The @ and /@ save shortcuts have been removed so that lines beginning with these characters remain intact.
Use /s to save your work.
Questing, Dialogue, and Group Improvements
Quest progression has received several important fixes.
Quest objectives completed by one group member now count for other group members on the same quest. Kills made by charmed companions also count toward their owner's quest objectives.
You can now share quests with other members of your party if they meet the quest prerequisites.
Dialogue quests now correctly handle successful completion, fallback quests, and next-quest progression. Failed dialogue checks continue to activate fallback quests as intended.
Supply orders have also been improved:
- Older offices no longer issue obsolete orders under the mote crafting system.
- Abandoning an order refunds its materials and clears recipe progress.
- Completing an order properly clears the remaining recipe information.
Staff builders also have two additional vnum search options: q for quests and r for rooms.
Combat and Gameplay Fixes
A large number of fixes have been made across combat, classes, spells, and equipment.
Combat and Class Abilities
- Dazzling Display now correctly dazzles eligible enemies rather than the user.
- Deadly Fear now deals area damage when augmented by eight or more points, while lower augmentation remains single-target.
- Psionic Blast stun effects now properly prevent affected targets from taking combat turns.
- Swift Death and Master of Elements received bug fixes.
- Master Assassin now correctly checks prerequisites.
- Lich Touch has been added to the cooldown menu, displaying remaining time in seconds.
- Bozak Draconian death throes have been corrected.
- Litany of Righteousness and Touch of Undeath have been fixed.
- Dragons spawned for hunts now use their configured breath element rather than defaulting to fire.
- NPCs killed by ranged attacks from another room no longer require the player to enter the target's room to finish the kill.
Equipment and Crafting
- Randomized typed gear feats now receive valid weapon families, skills, or spell schools, with item descriptions displaying the assigned type.
- Hoopak crafting now recognizes an equipped weaponsmith's hammer.
- Armor-class enchantments now correctly use water motes for universal and enhancement bonuses.
- Reforging no longer grants unintended general XP or progresses obsolete crafting skills.
- The equipment restriction allowing only one item with the relevant flag is now enforced correctly.
- Scroll storage and stored-wand spell-name parsing have been fixed.
- Artificers can now scribe eligible Wizard spells without memorizing them, using their Artificer level for eligibility and scroll caster level.
Golems and Companions
Crafted golems now retain their identifying flags and construct identity after login, preventing the golem repair system from rejecting them.
The repair system can also recover already-loaded crafted golems affected by the previous issue.
An issue causing golem crafting to reset when other charmed companions were present has also been addressed.
Other Fixes
- NPC hunt targets no longer respawn as duplicates simply because the original target moved to another room.
- Hidden NPCs can now be detected through successful Perception checks.
- Bard performances correctly check all equipped instruments.
- Apply Poison now routes to the correct command.
- Shopkeepers can respond to price inquiries without requiring a prior player introduction.
- The 256-color preference now persists through linkdead saves and reconnects, preserving both enabled and disabled settings.
- Several issues with the
FOGroom flag have been corrected. - The Epic Mage Armor help file and armor-class application have been corrected.
